High School?

Im a sophomore in high school and I want to take AP english my junior year. I asked my teacher what english class i should take and she said "american lit" (normal english) I have always tested high in yearly english tests, and my grade in english is an A. Should I still try to take the ap english exam ? and what should I say if my counselor gives me a hard time about wanting to take the class without teacher recommendation ?

High School?
Well it really depends on what your school counts as AP english classes, and how comfortable you feel with taking them. I took 2 AP english classes my junior year (okay, I'm still in my junior year but you know what I mean), and I did fine in both of them. You might want to bring it up to your teacher that you were thinking about trying out for the AP classes, and see if she thinks you can do it. Then ask the counselor anyways, if you think that you can do it then try. It sounds like you're good at English classes, so you should at least be able to take the exam.
Reply:Depends, english 3 is english language which is going to be completely different from english 2. English 3 (which is the type of english most juniors take) is a course that studies the language of a text like why the author wrote it the way he did or the tone of a writing, my opinion is that it's not as interesting as english lit. because in english lit. you analyze a story and what it's about rather than analyzing the vocabulary and the style and all that jazz
Reply:First off, go talk to your English teacher, let him or her know that you are interested. Ask them specifically what they think about YOU taking the class. Perhaps they recommended standard English because you didn't show enough interest. If you show enough interest in the subject the teacher will recommend you.

I took IB English my junior year, and was a low A sophomore student. I passed the class with Cs. Though these are weighted.. but still a bummer on my GPA. If you aren't afraid of lots of essay writing and reading lots of books go for it! From the sounds of it you are a good student and with dedication I know that any A student can at LEAST pass advanced English!

and also, teachers and counselors are on your side! Let them know what you want, this is your education, get the most out of it!
