I'm a sophmore in high school, and I am starting to think about colleges. The UC (university of california), CSU system only counts your sophmore, junior year gpas. My gpa is good now (in the second semester of my sophmore year) but my first semester I REALLY messed up. If I retake the classes that I didnt do good in, and get A's for the rest of my 10, and 11th grade years. And end up with about a 3.6, what UC schools can I get into ?
High School?
All schools look at all 4 years of HS as well as a myriad of other things, not the least of which is service (in your communtiy, church, etc).. Well rounded individuals with drive are what colleges are looking for. If you show stability in grades or a progression of getting better, don't sweat it!
Reply:not sure if retaking classes would be a smart choice since your counselor may not let you...you do have to get out of high school in four years. i suggest that you suck it up and do better now. 11th grade is what colleges usually look at most (a little of 10th)! remember, GPA, SAT/ACT scores/community services/other involvements: clubs, sports, music, etc. also counts. don't just concentrate on GPA.
Reply:I *think* you are gauranteed entry to a UC if you fulfill the requirements, but I got myself out of California as soon as I graduated and didn't even consider staying in state. As for liberal arts schools (Iknow, I know, not what you're looking at right now) they look at the whole package and you have more of a chance to explain your gpa through your interview and personal statement. You'll certainly get more consideration and sympathy from a smaller liberal arts college.
